Personalized State Wall Art {Where We Met}

DIY personalized state wall art makes the perfect unique gift idea or to show off your own home state or where you and your significant other met.

Personalized State Canvas Wall Art - Where We Met

I keep adding projects to my dining room “Des Moines” wall gallery. This personalized state wall art canvas is a good addition as well as good practice for an upcoming subway art canvas project for my gallery. This one highlights where my husband and I are each from and where we met.

My inspiration for this project came from a canvas I saw on RedEnvelope.com which I was “this close” to  buying, but it didn’t come in quite the right color.

Once I decided to make it myself, I decided to add a few other elements. My husband and I are both originally from Iowa and we met in college here, so I wanted to show those spots on our map.

Supplies:

  • 9×12 Canvas
  • Acrylic paint – 3 colors (blue background, yellow stars, and a red heart)
  • Foam brushes
  • Stencils (Iowa outline, small star, small heart)

I created my stencils with my Silhouette Cameo. First I placed my state and name stencils on the canvas and painted my background color over the top and sides.

Then I carefully peeled off the stencils. I could have just stopped here and been pretty happy, but it really wouldn’t have had as much meaning.

Next I placed my star stencils where both my husband’s and my hometowns are on the map and painted them yellow. Since where we met is close to one of the stars, I let them dry first, removed the stencils and then placed the heart stencil for where we met and painted it red.

I’ve added it to my mantle arrangement until we’re ready to hang our gallery wall in the dining room. If I had it to do again, I probably would have made the heart slightly smaller or nixed it all together. I really liked it when it was just the two stars. This was actually a pretty easy project once I had my stencils created, so if it doesn’t grow on me, I may redo it.

This is only my third project with my Silhouette Cameo, and I’m loving it so far! I still have a lot to learn – one project at a time.

Great project! Thanks for sharing!

  7. Thanks Miranda! I’ve seen people frame maps in the shape of their states together of where they both came from. You could also do a larger canvas with both states. So many options!
