I like to get wine. I like to give wine. I can’t wait to give wine this holiday season in this Sweater Wine Bottle Holder. I’ve been working on several upcycled sweater projects, and this one may be my favorite so far.

I actually stumbled upon this idea the other day when I was buying a mini cupcake stand from Urban Outfitters. They always have such fun stuff, so I browsed around and saw a knit wine bottle holder. I had just finished my sweater Christmas tree, and I had plenty of knit material left to try to make a sweater wine bottle holder. In my quest for a tutorial, I didn’t find one, but I did find a similar sweater wine bottle bag from Terry’s Village – they also have an Ugly Sweater version! If you don’t want to make your own, both of these are good options.

I never found a pattern, so I decided to wing it, and I think it turned out pretty darn well! I had a sweater I had purchased at TJMaxx on Clearance last year for $7, specifically to use for some sweater crafts. I already had buttons on hand.

I started by cutting off one sleeve of my sweater. I cut the sleeve into 3 pieces – the cuff, an 8 inch section and then a circle that was the diameter of a wine bottle. I simply traced the bottom of a bottle onto paper and then cut the sweater into a circle about a half inch larger all the way around. The 8 inch section and the cuff, I turned inside out and cut off the seam and opened them up flat.

I pinned the cuff and the 8 inch section together with the right sides facing each other and then sewed them together using a zig zag stitch. After that I pinned the main section around the bottle inside out to make sure I had a snug fit.

After sewing up the side seam, I pinned the bottom circle with all pieces still inside out. When you sew this, leave 1/4-1/2 inch seam allowance

I trimmed a little of the excess sweater on the seams so it wasn’t too bulky. Then I finally turned the wine bottle holder right side out and sewed on my buttons.

If you’re giving red wine, consider making some spiced wine mix to go along with it.

I’ve got at least one more sweater project coming up this next week. Here in Iowa temps plummeted last week, so it seems fitting to try to be as cozy and warm as possible. It also feels good to finally use the sweaters I bought last year for projects and never completed at the time.
